Alexander Calder – “Portrait of Eduard Penkala” 1929

I came across this piece by Calder and it immediately reminded me of my continuous line drawings. I had previously played with the idea of using wire to create my sculptures, however I don’t feel that this really brings anything that the drawings don’t already do. Wire is also a very impersonal material, the artist’s imprints are absent from the final piece, unlike the way clay captures fingerprints and nail marks.
